Becoming a Volunteer

4-H adult volunteers may participate in the 4-H Youth Development Program in a variety of ways.

Organizational Unit Volunteers administer a 4-H unit such as a club, camp, or special interest group and serve as the primary contact person for the unit. The organizational volunteer provides support, guidance, and direction to 4-H members and the unit. Position Description

Project Volunteers function as members of the unit leadership team and work with
4-H members enrolled in the project to support and guide their learning of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Position Description

Activity or Event Volunteers provide leadership within a specific, short-term 4-H project or activity and advise and assist 4 H members in planning events and activities. These volunteers also identify resources available to help members plan activities. Position Description

Resource/Key Adult Volunteers provide specialized leadership and support in one or more project areas by encouraging and guiding volunteers to plan and conduct quality project educational project experiences. These volunteers also develop resources for project volunteers, conduct project-related events and activities, and attend training workshops to keep up to date on new developments and availability of teaching materials in the subject matter area(s). Club Volunteer Enrollment Coordinators (VECs) co-administer enrollment within their club though the 4hOnline Enrollment System. They are granted access to the 4hOnline system beyond their own family level. Position Description

Other Volunteers help with transportation, management, or recruitment.

All Volunteers provide a safe environment that fosters positive youth development, and must adhere to and help enforce the University of California 4 H YDP policies, procedures, mission, and core values.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

An individual who would like to volunteer in the 4-H Youth Development Program must apply and meet all the following requirements prior to being appointed by the UCCE County Director:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Cannot be simultaneously enrolled as a 4-H youth member.
  • Complete on-line enrollment. For instructions click here.
  • Submit to and receive criminal record clearance from the California Department of Justice. Live Scan forms are available from the Contra Costa County 4-H office.
  • Complete the 4-H Volunteer Orientation by attending a New Leader Training and completing Creating Safe Spaces.
  • Agree to abide by the policieis, procedures, Mission and Core Values of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program and the Code of Conduct and all county 4-H policies and procedures.
  • Pay the annual adult volunteer member fee.

APPOINTMENT OF VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer appointments are reviewed on an annual basis. Re-enrolling volunteers must annually update their enrollment on-line and submit a medical treatment authorization form. The County Director may require re-enrolling volunteers to submit to a criminal record clearance at anytime during their tenure as a 4-H volunteer.

To enroll on-line follow the instructions for member enrollment. Any additional forms you might need are available from your Club Enrollment Coordinator (VEC).

Certification requirement for all New Volunteers. Open to ALL adults. Those with 5 years or less experience in 4-H are encouraged to attend.
